Night Vale Cross Stitch, Finally!  18

Hello Stitchers! I have some special charts for you today. I have been working on these Welcome to Night Vale cross stitch charts on and off for six months, and I have been dieing to share them. It was not till the other day that I realized it had been four months since I made a blog post! It has been a long and crazy four months: I re-injured my shoulder (don’t wrestle drunk bike messengers kids), my roommate is still pretty sick but is at the Mayo Clinic right now getting the “Dr. House” work up , and I got to scratch “Have dog with mohawk” scratched off my bucket list.
(Sir Murphy Loves it)

Thankfully things are starting to calm a bit and I can get back to charting nerdy things on a more frequent basis.

I have quite a few Night Vale charts for you today, and tried to make patterns for all level of stitcher. To save space I had to shrink some of the images, so hopefully you get a good idea of how they might look. I also added some technique info and “just marks” versions of most patterns for those of you who like to adjust colors, or just don’t like having the colors filled in. Most patterns are also multi-paged, to make them easier to ready without having to enlarge them from a single PDF page.

As always please contact me with any questions, comments, offerings of chocolate, broken links, pattern issues, pictures of puppies, or pics of your creations (my favorite).

*click on my FAQ page if you need help reading or downloading patterns.

On many of the patterns I have the script “empty”, or as “background”. I have a very good reason for this, so I made up this sample of several ways to tackle lettering. You can use these techniques to personalize my patterns or to help you tackle letters surrounded by stitching on any patterns you create.

Back stitch samples

My favorite way for dealing with script on a solid stitched background is #1 and #7, back stitching around the “empty” background fabric.

I find #1 to be cleaner and easier to read than just stitching in the number flat, like #5, #10, and #(1)3.

#1 and #7 give greater depth, texture, and clarity than no back stitch on an empty background like in #(1)1 or the muddyness of cross and back stitching in the same color like #3, #8, and #1(3).

I also find that having back stitching in a color contrasting neighboring stitches like #1,#4,#6,#7,#9, or#(1)2, make the symbols much easier to read than having similar colors like #2,#8, or #11.

If you are using a large fabric or grid to work on, like monks cloth, the back stitching might not have as great a visual impact on any kind of script or numerals you might use, so these samples might not hold as much weight for you. As always, make some samples first to see if your thread count or back stitching technique need adjusting.

Valentine’s Hearts and Our Favorite Night Vale Couple  0

Hello Stitchers!
That time of year is upon us where candy, diamonds, and cheesy romance movies are thrown in our faces. It is Valentine season, so I decided to whip up some knit/crochet charts that go with the season, and some that express the true love between one of my favorite couples, Cecil & Carlos (Celios if you are in the know).

If you don’t listen to the Welcome to Night Vale podcast, I strongly suggest you at least listen to the first one. It is not your average podcast, it’s more of a radio play. Cecil is a local radio host from the desert town of Night Vale, and Carlos is the brilliant and dreamy Scientist who comes into town. Carlos finds that Night Vale is the most scientifically interesting town in the world. Things in Night Vale just do not follow the rules: Beware of librarians, do not enter the dog park, and above all else Hail the Mighty Glow Cloud!

So today I have a couple Valentines charts, one happy, and one on the mend. I also have quite a few Cecil & Carlos charts. There is something for every level of color work stitcher, from beginner to “I want as many strands as possible”. Each set is basically the same chart with different color variations. I almost forgot, I made some charts of the great Night Vale eye as well. Don’t worry cross stitchers, I have some special Night Vale patterns up for you soon.
Red Heart for these charts
All the colors above are used in today’s charts, and are from the Red Heart Classic Yarn Collection. Some other good Acrylic options are Vanna’s Choice: Eggplant (Dark Purple), Dusty Purple (Purple), and Choice Raspberry (Pink).

I hope you have a good Valentines Day. If you get bored on your date night you could alwayssend my friend Matt Ward (Stand up comedian and swell enough guy), a tweet because Saint Valentine stole his birthday. Personally I will be watching Anything For Love because Patrick Gilmore is in it, and it seems I only leave the house for puppies and family anymore (yes mom I know this is why I’m still single).

As always, feel free to contact me with any questions, comments, boxes of chocolates, bad links, or pics of your creations (my favorite).

It’s my birthday, so it’s random stuff I like  0

That’s right, it’s the first day of July. Usually I don’t get to do much on my birthday around here but Canada likes me so much they made it A holiday! I love those guys. Since I’ve made it to 35 alive, I decided to throw up some random charts that might not be entirely understood or popular. There are a handful of you out there that will love them with me and I am cool with that. I will explain each novelty as I go, for those in the dark.

Obviously some of these have had some computer generated help, but it’s my birthday and I can do what I want.

BABACHU! This is a man who’s portrait can be found all over the world in any medium from oil paint to bronze, but you most likely have never seen him, unless that is you have ever visited Columbus, especially durring festival season. He was a great nude model from my college days, interesting features and the ability to hold a pose like a statue, and on the streets he’s got all the right moves and the best Jazz Hands out there! I always run into him at the strangest times. Once It was 5:30am the middle of downtown, no one around and I saw him blocks away and thought I was hallucinating. When he got close we stopped and had a nice chat about how we hadn’t seen each other in awhile. He’s magic I say.

This first chart is from an ancient poster for his dance class that my friend Lisa has some how kept in almost mint condition. It looks a lot darker than it actually is.

If you don’t know who Dean Winchester is yet, then you probably haven’t visited this site much. He kills demons, vampires, and all kinds of mooks. He also happens to be a smart ass. One time they caught him and threw him in jail for murder, so he threw out his best Blue Steal for the mugshot. It’s a classic Supernatural moment.

This leads us to the last and best section of my Birthday Love extravaganza, the Patrick Gilmore section. If you don’t already know about Patrick you should check out my Patrick Gilmore page, it will fill you in on all his actor type stuff. When in doubt I make charts of this goofy guy or tweet him strange messages. What can I say, he gives me lots to work with.

This last Patrick chart I am bombarding you with is my favorite pic of him these days. He took it at an award show I think. One of these days I am going to spend an eternity stitching this.

That’s the end of my mixed bag of odd little loves. If you made it this far I applaud you and thank you for sharing in my wacky world. It is the best present ever to be able to introduce you to these people and help you stitch those things you never thought you wanted to.

Hello stitchers! It’s almost Pride week. There is something that will make this year’s Columbus Pride Festival greater than ever
that’s right, good old Uncle George is going to be the grand marshal of this year’s Pride Parade!

You don’t have to be Takei in order to have fun at Pride. Columbus is a pretty Takei friendly city, and I couldn’t imagine why anyone would live here if they were homophobic (not saying that they don’t, or why they would be in the first place). When I was in college I lived in The Short North, or “The Short” as they cool kids say. It has traditionally been the most rainbow covered area of the city. Therefore I started going to the Pride Parade when I moved there. To tell you the truth, my first pride parade was an excursion originally planned to keep my friend’s mom busy while she visited. We had a great time, said mom got a blow up sun from the male stripper float and I got a sunburn and broke my toe. It was very memorable.

In honor of this most festive of local occasions I have a hand full of Pride & Equality charts. There is a little bit of something for everyone :)

Have a safe and happy Pride!

The Tardis Key To My Heart  0

In college I worked at a science museum. I did a lot of ushering in the planitarium, you know those people with the red flashlights that kick you out when your kid won’t stop screaming, yep that was me. Because of this I got to spend a lot of time between shows picking the brains of the presenters, most of whom had fancy science degrees. One was a past physicist that I was slightly obsessed with, shocking I know. Randomly one day I started talking about Doctor Who, again shocking. This was pre-Eccelston so us whovians were a little more rare back then. Well as I was explaining how I needed to get a new chain for my Tardis key, He cocks his head to the side and says “you mean like this?”, As He Pulls Out A Chain With A Tardis Key On It! I immediately professed my love for him. It was awkward for him. Last I heard he was traveling the country building planitariums. *sigh*

So today I have two Baker Tardis Key Pillow Patterns. I also have the “true” versions incase you just want to add one to a project. They are both in squared blocks, and the unshaded version in knit squares for now. I will updated later with a knit block version of the shaded one soon.

As always I love getting requests, questions and comments, you can follow my tumblr, You can even tweet me if you don’t want to comment on this page. I’m cool like that.

Abbadon, such a classy Demon  0

I got a snow day today. It was so exciting I decided to stay in bed a bit too late and chart a couple of things. In reality I charted one thing, or person, or Demon, ok She’s a Knight of Hell bent on being Queen of Hell: Abbadon! She also happens to be played by the wonderful Alaina Huffman.

Two pillow sized charts, also with the DMC color charts for the cross stitchers.

I’m not sure what I’m going to do for the rest of the evening, but I feel like I’ve accomplished something.

Enjoy, you crazy little Hell spawn!

It feels good to finish something  0

Yesterday I finally finished 1-11 Doctor Who charts! It took me a little longer than expected, but hey, life can get in the way sometimes. You should go check them out, they are pretty nifty if I do say so myself.

I have also been stitching some as well, you’ll get to see them when I finish. Do you work on multiple projects at a time? I have to have at least two or three going at all times, of each medium. Creativity can be exhausting & fantastic for making you into a social hermit.

Since I have been so far behind on my posts lately, I decided to just sit down and crank out a new chart before dinner…ya it’s almost 10pm. What can I say, I suffer for my art.

Today I bring you everyone’s crazy telepathic, multidimensional, or whatever alien: Stark from Farscape. If you have never watched Farscape, I highly suggest it. Who doesn’t live Ben Browder in leather pants, and Claudia Black too for that matter, oh and puppets & crazy bad guys & all kinds of screwy mind melts. Good stuff.
It’s a pillow pattern, with DMC color chart as well, for the cross stitchers out there.

Save, save often  0

Last night I was so excited, I only had one more Doctor to chart for my Doctor Who set of pillows. I was finishing up some of the details then….my phone went black. I was so focused that I totally ignored the fact that my phone was dying and I hadn’t saved any of my work. Back in my day we had to hand write reports, saving is not second nature. I was so bummed I just made some hot cocoa and watched Supernatural, and sulked a bit. Luckily I have something saved for just such an occasion (more on that later).

In my quest to make charts that are not just for Stargate, Doctor and Supernatural fans, I’ve been trying to think of other fandoms that get a less than stellar crafty review. I’m itching to make some Firefly charts, I just need to do some research. Such torture. Who doesn’t want a Malcolm Reynolds pillow anyway?

What fandom do you think is given the cold shoulder? Doctor Who was given the cold shoulder when I was a kid and no one got excited when I made a paper mâché Dalek in art class, mainly because I only knew three other people who knew what Doctor Who was. Let me know and I’ll see if I can help make your stitching dreams come true.

Back to my previously mentioned emergency backup chart. I have Teal’c for you, the ‘Went back in time to save SG1 so I have a cool grey patch in my hair’ Teal’c. He’s a lot more cuddly with hair I think. I have a pillow chart, with larger print version & DMC colors for you cross stitchers.

As always, please feel free to comment or sent me a tweet with any questions, comments, suggestions, or pictures of your creations. Enjoy!

Oh Lorde, it’s Samantha Carter  0

Now that the sub-zero temperatures have abated, my fingers can crochet again. Arthritis is not your friend. Thankfully all I need is a stylus to help me make patterns on cold days, and I got woken up early yesterday and tapped out a couple of ladies for you, Lorde and General Samantha Carter.

What does a teenage singer from New Zealand & an intergalactic scientist (and actress Amanda Tapping who plays her) have in common? Well they are all rather good role models for girls at the moment (we’ll see how Lorde deals with fame).

So I have 3 pillow sized patterns for you today (if 5×5=1inch), as well as their DMC cross stitch equivalents. As always please let me know if you have any questions, requests, or better yet pics of your creations!

Let’s do the Arctic Vortex!  6

Hello Stitchers, if you haven’t heard, it’s freekin cold outside! I have spent the last few days huddled under my electric blanket with my phone. My tea gets cold in a few minutes and unbeknownst to the Landman, the hot water pipe has frozen. For some reason I decided to leave the house for an appointment today. I took the bus since my car has no heat, and let me tell you it looks like a ghost town downtown. The busses are even running on time, it’s like bizzaro world. Before you mention how we are weinies because it’s not that cold for you, our infrastructure and wardrobes are not built for this. A water main even exploded downtown yesterday. If it had snowed at least we would have a little insulation.

Since I have had so much time alone to ponder the world through my phone, I have been watching a lot of Supernatural on Netflix and making some lovely fan girl patterns. I have four for you today. Anti-Demon (Smaller version here), Devil’s Trap, Angel Warding, and Sam doing his mental exorcism face. They are all pillow size (if 5×5=one inch), so I suggest printing out the Large Print versions (2pages) if you don’t have a printer that let’s you choose size. I also have the Sam pattern with the DMC color chart for cross stitch.

I really want to see someone do a girly colored Demon Trap, I guess I’m weird like that.

Enjoy, and stay warm!
